Emily, Jess & Abi are our #dreamteam of wedding co-ordinators here at Doxford Barns; each bring their unique set of skills and personalities to the barns, yet they all have one thing in common – a passion for weddings – and today we delve behind the scenes to introduce our newest team member – Emily Davies…
When did you discover you had a passion for organising weddings and events?
When I organised my own wedding back in December 2017, I knew that working in events was what I wanted to do, so I changed from a career in law to follow my ambition and here I am!
How did you get into this career and how long have you been in the industry?
I realised that working in an office day in day out wasn’t for me – I needed to be in a more fun and exciting atmosphere. I wanted to be surrounded by happy couples, therefore I started looking around at venues in Northumberland and Doxford Barns stood out to me.
What do you love most about your job?
I love to see the faces of a newly-married couple feel 100% satisfied with their wedding experience at Doxford Barns. Just to see the joy and excitement on their faces as they start their new journey together, makes all the hard work and planning worth every second.
How do you remain up-to-date with the latest trends?
Have you planned your own wedding?
Yes – 8th December 2017 in Gower, South Wales. This was the best day of my life!!! I stressed and stressed and realistically there was no need for me to, everything was perfect – nothing went wrong… well if it did I didn’t notice a thing! My mum, sister and I (my dad helped too) planned the whole day down to the little hot chocolate shot favours which took us 4 hours to fill with powder and mini marshmallows! My dad still goes on about how he had to glue gun these tiny silver snowflakes onto my chair bows for a whole day!!
My mum also made my wedding dress after I decided I didn’t like the dress I had bought from a shop the year before – I told her this a week before the wedding…. She managed to make the most beautiful dress I could have asked for in 4 days!!
I also made my wedding cake the night before my wedding. I was up until 2am with my bridesmaids giggling away and trying to stop them from eating the decorations! I then got up at 5am because I was far too excited!! The day was phenomenal!
What do you think are the most important things to consider when planning a wedding at Doxford Barns?
WEDDING INSURANCE – we live in Northumberland! You should get wedding insurance no matter where you choose to have your wedding, however it really is an important consideration given that we had such unpredictable snow in MARCH this year!!
Also, it is definitely worth remembering that we are always here to make everything on your day flow sweetly – the couple should lay the stress on us not them!
What do you think will be the most popular wedding trends in 2018?
Statement table plans – we’re seeing a shift from the simple table plan board to ones which are very extravagant.
What would your 3 most important pieces of advice for couples be?
- Make sure you are happy – try not to worry about what other people would like – it is your day, they will be happy for you!
- Wedding Insurance
- Relax!! – a wedding does not need to be a stressful time, it should be fun to plan!
What is your favourite thing about Doxford Barns?
The Threshing Hall – I think this ceremony hall is a step back into a fairytale – when all the lights and candles are lit, the Threshing Hall is simply astonishing.
What does your typical day look like?
On a wedding day we mostly make sure that everything is running smoothly for the bride and groom. We will spend the morning checking on the bride and how she is getting on, we make sure the groom is looking dapper for his bride and we make sure that all the guests are kept entertained before the couple say “I Do”.
We help the registrars meet up with the bride and groom before their nuptials and we try to do this without disturbing the couple too much!
If it ever rains we provide a ridiculous amount of umbrellas; the best photos happen when we are holding up the bride’s dress whilst she tries to waddle fast across the path to the door!
We sometimes help with the music throughout the ceremony and make sure their timings are perfect for the entrance, bridesmaids, page boys etc!!
After the ceremony we always greet the couple with a glass of Prosecco to congratulate them on their newly-married status and are always around to help if anybody needs us; but we leave them to enjoy their day if we’re not needed.
What are your favourite parts of the job?
Meeting the couples who come around for show arounds – you can see how happy they are; newly engaged and excited about their potential wedding venue.
What you do like to do in your spare time?
I live with my husband, Ben and our two dogs; Joey and Pip (old English sheepdog and working cocker spaniel) in Northumberland. When I’m not baking, we spend most of our days off walking the pups, doing fitness regimes, socialising with our friends and tasting my new baking ideas! This is a nice and simple way to relax, which is perfect for us
We are actually from Wales but moved due to Ben’s work! I will be happy anywhere, so long as the beach isn’t too far away ha!
